The new single is from the upcoming compilation album, Joe Strummer 001 set for release on September 28th. “Rose of Erin” was recorded for the 1993 movie, When Pigs Fly but the soundtrack was never released. The Sara Driver film starred Marianne Faithful as a ghost who helps plot revenge on a murderous bar owner. Strummers ballad has an indie-folk sound, unlike some of his earlier works with The Clash. Strummer would have turned 66 next week on August 21st and the single released by Ignition Records is in honor of the music legends birthday. The Joe Strummer 001 compilation album contains 32 tracks of previously unreleased material including unreleased demos and additional rare soundtrack recordings outside of his work with The Clash. The set also features one of the last songs he recorded before his death in 2002, “London is Burning.” According to Strummer’s website, an extensive catalog of material was discovered after his death. Recorded songs were superimposed and hidden among other tracks, as discovered by Peter Moore who also remastered the recordings for the new compilation album.
The expansive box set is available in multiple formats including deluxe vinyl and CD sets. The Super deluxe limited edition collectors box comes with 2 CDs and 4 LPs, a 64 page hardcover book, a 7” single, a cassette, a screen print, and a replica of Strummer’s California drivers license.
Strummer was widely known as co-founder and lead singer of the iconic punk band The Clash, who achieved success in the U.S. with the albums London Calling (released in 1979) and Combat Rock (released in 1982). Later, Strummer also played in The 101ers, The Pogues and Big Audio Dynamite and had a successful solo career. Strummer died unexpectedly in December of 2002 from an undiagnosed heart defect.
