The experimental rock group from Philadelphia, digitally released an EP (untitled) Friday and announced a new album (Untitled) scheduled for release on October 5th, via Run For Cover Records. Prior to these announcements, mewithoutYou, released the new track, “Julia, (or, ‘Holy to the LORD’ on the Bells of Horses)” on Monday. Listen to the new track below.
Since the Weiss brothers started the band in 2001, mewithoutYou have released six full-length albums and several EPs. Not wanting to restrict themselves to the confines of one genre, the band prefers to merge styles creating a unique progressive sound. It’s this approach that shaped the new album (Untitled) and its accompanying EP (untitled).
“It’s a perennial question within the band of how far to push out into the unknown,” says vocalist Aaron Weiss. “Of course, it’s nice to do something new, but to what extent, and to what end?”
While Aaron worked from his makeshift studio in his new home of Idaho, guitarists Mike Weiss and Brandon Beaver stockpiled ideas from their homes in Philadelphia. It was this distance allowing, members to write freely and Aaron’s self-examination, that provided an abundance of material to create the two new releases.
The new songs are more a reflection of Weiss’ lived experiences than previous works. He describes his attempts to “go into greater depths of whatever I am and face what’s there-however petty, incoherent or humiliating- and emerge with some reason for hope, a reason for joy regardless.” Both new releases are an expansive collection of poetic lyricism backed by intricate guitar melodies.
