Japanese Breakfast @ Brooklyn Steel 1/17

Japanese Breakfast has expanded her tour through 2019 after high demand, following her stellar set at New York City’s Panorama Festival in July. Japanese Breakfast spends the summer performing a blend of festivals and concerts, with sets at Lincoln Calling Festival and Austin City Limits in addition to Panorama before making her way around the country throughout the fall. The new dates include a three-night New Year’s Eve stint in Philadelphia, followed by a show at Brooklyn Steel on 1/17 with support from Hand Habits and Palehound. New York City is eager to welcome Japanese Breakfast back after her fantastic set at Panorama and her popular after party DJ set following the festival hosted by BrooklynVegan alongside The Shacks.

Japanese Breakfast, the moniker and solo project of 29-year-old musician Michelle Zauner, originated as a side project for Zauner while still working with her Philadelphia-based emo band Little Big League. However, Zauner decided to pursue her solo music full time after moving home to Oregon due to her mother receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. Zauner spent a good deal of time at home working on her solo music while working through her grief, releasing her first full length album under Japanese Breakfast, Psychopomp, in 2016 via Yellow K Records with her sophomore follow-up, Soft Sounds from Another Planet, releasing in 2017 via Dead Oceans. Zauner explores dark themes in her music, dealing with topics like death, break-ups, and emotional abuse. With her music stemming from such a personal, difficult time in her life, it is no surprise that Zauner’s raw, emotional lyrics and somber yet cathartic sounds captivate audiences.

Japanese Breakfast returns to New York City this winter with great support from Hand Habits and Palehound to round out the 1/17 show at Brooklyn Steel. Tickets on sale now.
