Norwegian nu-disco electronica producer Lindstrøm has just unveiled a new song titled “Blinded By the LEDs,” a track celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, a famous waterside modern art center/gallery/live venue.
The song also serves as a preview of his forthcoming performances later this month meant to mark the anniversary. The sold out shows, happening August 23rd, 25th and 26th, will take place exactly 50 years after the legendary Norwegian contemporary composer Arne Nordheim performed the electro-acoustic composition “Solitaire,” on opening night in 1968.
In homage to the performance, Lindstrøm himself will be doing his performance entirely in analogue, playing more than 10 songs live on more than 20 different analogue synthesizers and drum machines with visuals.
The song itself is not directly honoring Nordheim’s musique concréte style, but is rather a reference to Bruce Springsteen and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. According to a press release, Lindstrøm has taken influence and sounds from a variety of sources into the song, including Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” ESG’s “Moody,” Queen’s “Back Chat,” Liquid Liquid’s “Cavern,” Sheryl Lee Ralph’s “In The Evening,” John Carpenter’s “Assault On Precinct 13” and Lindstrøm’s own “Fast & Delirious.”
The Henie Onstad Kunstsenter was founded in 1968 by world famous figure skater Sonja Henie (who died the year after) and her husband, shipping magnate and art collector Niels Onstad. The HOK has become an important part of Oslo’s art world, organizing exhibitions and performances, with its art center being visited by around 100,000 people each year.
