Mitski @ Elsewhere 8/18

Mitski has announced an album release show at Elsewhere Hall on August 18, following her August 17 release of Be the Cowboy, her fifth studio album via Dead Oceans. The show’s announcement arrived after the release of a lengthy list of US fall tour dates, including a two-night stint with support from Downtown Boys and SASAMI in New York City at Brooklyn Steel that will close out the tour (tickets can be found here). Mitski has had a stacked 2018, beginning the year by opening for Lorde and Run the Jewels which was followed by a summer headlined tour. The summer also included a recent performance at NPR’s Turning the Tables Live alongside Carly Rae Jepson, Phoebe Bridgers, I’m With Her, and Jamila Woods, a night which celebrated female pioneers in music.

The 27-year-old was born in Japan before being relocated with her family to thirteen different countries throughout her childhood, finally settling on New York for college and calling it home. While in college, Mitski self-released her first two albums which were created as student projects, Lush and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, both rooted in the piano, even utilizing the school’s student orchestra. After graduating, Mitski released her third studio album, Bury Me at Makeout Creek through Double Double Whammy, straying away from the piano and embracing the guitar, employing gritty, distorted sounds that elevated her raw, emotional lyrics. In 2015, Mitski signed with Dead Oceans and released her fourth studio album, Puberty 2, in 2016 featuring her hit single “Your Best American Girl.” The album landed on many top album lists for the year by publications like Rolling Stone and SPIN after proving successful on the Billboard and Heatseekers charts. Mitski’s upcoming fifth album, Be the Cowboy, will mark another pivotal moment for the singer-songwriter, embracing new synth sounds while sticking true to her emotive, powerful lyrics as she approaches a new stage in her life and career.

Catch Mitski at Elsewhere following the release of Be the Cowboy with Sidney Gish providing support. And don’t miss her when she returns to New York City at Brooklyn Steel on 11/30 and 12/1.
