Smashing Pumpkins “Shiny And Oh So Bright” reunion tour continued in Holmdel, New Jersey for their 30th-anniversary concert. During the show, the group was joined by special guests Joy Division legend Peter Hook, Courtney Love and AFI’s Davey Havok for a rousing performance of “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” Pitchfork reports.
The cover remained close to the original with its deeply recognizable hook and monotone pace. Corgan’s unique voice did, however, form a strong recontextualization. The post-punk “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was originally released by Joy Division in 1980 and written by singer Ian Curtis, inspired by marital challenges. Following the suicide of Curtis, his wife inscribed “Love Will Tear Us Apart” on his headstone.
During the performance, Consequence of Sound reports, Smashing Pumpkins, joined by Love, also played Hole songs “Celebrity Skin” and “Malibu,” both co-written by Corgan and released in 1998 on the group’s third studio album Celebrity Skin.
Deftones Chino Moreno joined the Pumpkins for performances of “Bodies” off Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and “Snail” from Gish, which the band hadn’t performed since 2000.
Mark McGrath was featured in a performance of the 1997 Sugar Ray hit “Fly,” which the group released on their 1997 record Floored. McGrath also performed on a cover the Judas Priest hit, “breaking the Law.”
Smashing Pumpkins continue their reunion tour with upcoming dates in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago and Kansas City. The group released “Solara” last June, and is working on two EPs, their first new material since Monuments to an Elegy (2014).
