In a nineties extravaganza, The Smashing Pumpkins were joined by rocker Mark McGrath during their 30th-anniversary performance at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, Stereogum reports. In an unusual addition to the setlist, Pumpkins and McGrath performed the Sugar Ray hit “Fly” off the group’s 1997 record Floored.
McGrath took center stage during the pop song singing and bringing out his well-crafted dance moves while Corgan backed him up on vocals. During Thursday’s anniversary show, McGrath also joined the Pumpkins covering the Judas Priest 1980 hit, “Breaking the Law,” released on the group’s album British Steel.
The Sugar Ray frontman has been involved throughout the tour through campy, carnivalesque videos that introduce various show segments. In one, he introduces the song “1979” while another comes before the James Iha performance of “Blew Away.”
The Smashing Pumpkins are expected to release two EPs in 2018, their first new material since Monuments to an Elegy in 2014. According to NME, Corgan says of the forthcoming EPS “Almost all the musical side is done with two days to go, leaving background vocals and last minute touches/flourishes/drang.”
The anniversary show also featured performances by Courtney Love, Peter Hook and Chino Moreno. The Smashing Pumpkins continue their reunion tour with upcoming dates in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago and Kansas City.
