Electronically uplifting and positively impacting
It’s not easy being different in 2018, but that is not stopping Star Amerasu (her stage name is spelled as AhMerAhSu). The Oakland artist expresses her cultural differences, sexual differences and life choices to her fans with open arms in the form of music. Last year’s debut EP, Rebecca, was a mix of grief and challenge. Each track on the EP hit a different social topic she had issues with, including substance use and white privilege. Her debut full-length album Star is a bit more upbeat and allows Amerasu to shine brighter than ever before without taking anyone’s negativity.
Star, in comparison to Rebecca, is extremely upbeat, fast tempo and highly addictive to listen to. In an interview with Paper Magazine, Amerasu explains how her album is split into three parts: self-compassion, expectations and men. She goes on to explain that Men will be more in-depth than the other two sections, saying “’Men’ is longer and more complicated because I was in an abusive relationship with this person, and I wanted to talk about it in a way that felt real and important.”
Star starts with the track “Exercise In Self Passion,” an interlude of sorts to really let the listener know that she is fully opening every bit of her body up to the world. The power track of the album, “Heartbreaker,” is an easy, breezy and bouncy tune matched beautifully with Amerasu’s light lyrics. “Perfect” combines club-like beats, keyboards and catchy lyrics. Tracks like “Stale Water” and “Need You, Need Me” are a bit more relaxed while still bringing in those electronic beats but allowing Amerasu’s voice to really flow like a river.
“The whole album is really an exploration of what it means to be Black, trans, femme, and young and having real problems,” Amerasu said for Paper Magazine. Star is honest in every sense of the word. She has given the voiceless a voice and proven that expressing feelings and diving into problems can be a worthwhile experience. Her activism efforts in the Oakland area have been noticed over the years, and now she is using that voice to let the world hear. She is a one of a kind artist creating music for everyone.
