Finishing out the 2019 lineup for Ecstatic Music Festival is indie rock duo Wye Oak in conjunction with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. Also joining the two performing acts is composer Owen Pallett who will be premiering new work alongside other artists still TBA. The blend of performances is sure to produce a one-of-a-kind creative collaboration, celebrating the New York City festival with members of all five boroughs through the Brooklyn Youth Chorus joining beloved rockers Wye Oak on stage for one night only. After the release of their sixth album earlier this year, The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs, Wye Oak will tour this fall with Ben Howard, hitting New York City for two nights at the Hammerstein Ballroom in October. The duo will also make appearances at UK and European festivals including Haven Music Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer.
Beginning under the moniker of Monarch in 2006 before changing it to Wye Oak, Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner released their first album If Children independently before being signed to Merge Records in 2008. Wye Oak are known for their musical genre infusions, their style spanning from dream pop to indie folk to synth pop to even exploring R&B. Not only do they experiment with genre, but they’re also known for their feats while performing – including Stack playing both the keyboards and drums at the same time, with his right hand on the drums while his left hand mans the keyboard. On their shift in musical stylings since their early years, the band told NBC, “So much of creative inspiration comes from a deeply intuitive place; you can’t force it. We’ve been a band for over 10 years, so it’s to be expected that we would change and evolve over time.” Given the band’s openness to change and invention, their collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus will be sure to deliver an inspired, unforgettable show to close out 2019’s Ecstatic Music Festival.
