Kendrick Lamar is pretty much seen by all as a musical and lyrical genius. When you listen to his music, you can hear the careful thought process gone that he been employed for each increment of the various piece. Usually, when Lamar’s music is covered by other musicians, the renditions tend to ignore some of the more important aspect that makes K-Dot’s music so unique. Recently, though, one group has expertly curated a beautiful cover for one of Kendrick’s most recent tracks “LOVE.” as Pitchfork notes.
Performed for Australia’s Triple J “Like A Version,” the cover starts off with some relatively soft synthesizer tones that relay as background assistance. Quickly, though, CHVRCHES singer Lauren Mayberry enters with her cigarette-velvet voice carrying Kendrick’s words in a more musical realm. The classic “LOVE.” beat comes in as a synth sample rolls over itself, creating a cacophony of an ethereal and musical world of glass. The chorus of the song follows in and CHVRCHES member Martin Doherty splits up the vocals with Mayberry, defining the call and response a little more than the original. Halfway through the song, Mayberry takes her line and drops it an octave for a verse, giving the cover an exciting amount of ballad energy and excitement.
The cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “LOVE.” by CHVRCHES is a softer, more angelic ballad-version that uses the core elements of the original, which allows for an extremely unique yet loyal variation. Unlike most covers of hip-hop pieces that usually use just acoustic guitar and vocals, the CHVRCHES cover involved much more layers of sound as each member employed their own personality into the music.
