Perfect mix of retro and unique
77:78 somehow manage to create 11 songs that combine retro ’70s vibes and MGMT-esque beats while staying fairly modern and fresh on its new album Jellies. The album opens with the overly catchy track “If I’m Anything,” which does a great job of merging everything listed above. With just one listen to this track, it is easy to tell that the listener is in for a treat as the album progresses.
“Poor It Out” may be considered a slower song in the world of 77:78, but it is still a solid track and sound for the group. This song, in particular, possesses similarities to songs such as “James” by MGMT, but has its own special flair with all of the fun and entertaining instruments used in the background throughout. This is one of those songs that is sure to get stuck in your head regardless of how many times you have actually listened to it.
While 77:78 possesses a unique sound across the board on this album, songs like “Copper Nail” set themselves apart mainly based on the vibe they bring to the table. “Copper Nail” specifically tends to be a bit more beachy than the other tracks on the album. This track embodies what seems like would be a chill summer day in the ’70s on a beach, which only adds to the uniqueness of 77:78.
“Chilli” on the other hand feels a bit more charged up, yet it still feels very ’70s in nature. The recurring guitar riff throughout the entirety of the track makes it easy for the listener to get pulled in as well as making it nearly impossible to not tap your toe along with the beat. This is one of the more fun tracks on the album and almost seems like one almost anyone would enjoy listening to.
The album wraps on the track “Wagons” and it contains many layers to the composition as a whole, making it a strong finish to an already strong album. The tempo changes alone are enough to keep any listener on their toes, all while leaving a lasting impression overall for 77:78 as a band. After giving the album an entire listen, it is easy to say that 77:78 came in swinging with Jellies being its first full-length album and we should all look forward to what is to come from 77:78 in the future.
