Tool fans everywhere took an extra Xanax this morning after Google sent out an alert stating the band’s new album, Illution World, had been released, Loudwire reports.
The moment of bliss quickly turned to disdain after fans realized the Tool in question is actually the Soundcloud rapper TOOL$ as opposed to the pioneering alternative metal band.
The misleading information created a fierce social media backlash. Ms. Dr. Professor Shell tweeted “What kind of MONSTER would name their music group TOOL and release an album today and then send my phone a notification saying ‘NEW ALBUM FROM TOOL’ close to the time we’re expecting an album from the real Tool. I actually thought they just dropped their album 6 months early”
Angst over the alert went on with Tucker King tweeting, “Nothing quite like getting a Google notification that says ‘New album from Tool’ only for it to be a hip-hop album by a band called Tool$. Screw you Google. Don’t play with my heart like this.”
Maynard James Keenan’s recent admission that new music is forthcoming will hopefully mitigate the current depression felt by fans. While accepting the Metal Hammer Golden Icon Award in London, Keenan spoke about Tool’s new music, saying, “I wouldn’t be here without you guys, so thank you very much for all that. A lot of work’s being done, a lot of work’s been done. I’ll go on record now saying you’re gonna see some new music next year.”
