Margaret Wander, aka rapper Dessa has shared a new video for her song “Fire Drills,” off of her latest album Chime released earlier this year. The album caters to both “casual pop fans and hip-hop heads alike,” as stated in mxdwn’s review of the album. It serves as the second single release from the album, following “5 out of 6.”
The new video brings in social commentary on being a woman in this society. It shows that a woman does not need to fit the gender stereotype by not wanting to be a princess at a young age but wanting to ride a motorcycle. Dessa outlines a powerful message to women saying that women can be whoever they want to be. It was directed by Irene Kotnik and serves as the third single release from the album, following “Good Grief” and “5 out of 6.” With “5 out of 6,” she sat down with Complex to discuss the lyrics, saying that she attempted to “reconcile sensitivity with grit–they’re about being the sort of person who makes herself available to the world, and who sometimes gets hurt by it, but holds her position all the same.” Check out the new “Fire Drills” video below.
The rapper recently wrapped up her spring tour in support of the album, playing shows across Europe and North America. She also performed headlining show at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, CA, playing 17 songs and said that“Rappers are like cats. They can get down from trees… Look at the bar!.” She also recently played SXSW alongside fellow female rapper Princess Nokia, Thunderpussy, and Lucia.
