Donald Glover is truly an all-around talent. From his start as an actor in beloved show “Community” to stand-up comedian to actor again in “Atlanta,” he has dominated all corners of the world of entertainment. However, his biggest presence in pop culture is definitely as the hip hop and R&B artist Childish Gambino.
For a while, headlines about Childish Gambino flashed music website front pages, purporting rumours that Gambino’s ex-record label, Glassnote Records, was suing the artist.
Despite previous reports, however, it seems that Glassnote isn’t actually after taking Gambino to court after all, but rather they’re just entangled in some complex money disputes. Court documents related to the three albums Gambino dropped under the Glassnote name — Camp, Because the Internet, and “Awaken, My Love!” — show that the issue between the artist and his former label centers around a dicey contract dispute related to $700,000 in digital performance royalties from “non-interactive streaming services.”
Apparently, Donald Glover entirely owns his master recordings and actually only licensed them out to Glassnote for a period of time that came to a close last October. As such, Gambino’s team is reportedly looking to acquire the label’s 50 percent cut of royalties. The label disagrees with this approach, alleging that the masters license itself gives them the right to the cut. Instead of the previously alleged lawsuit, however, the label has filed a complaint seeking a judge to “mediate the contract dispute.”
