Heavy metal group Converge have released a surprise four-song EP, Beautiful Ruin. According to Pitchfork, the release was taken from material recorded during The Dusk in Us sessions, and concludes the material from that time period.
Converge formed in Boston, MA in 1990 and have previously released nine studio albums including Halo in a Haystack (1994), Petitioning the Empty Sky (1996), When Forever Comes Crashing (1998), Jane Doe (2001), You Fail Me (2004), No Heroes (2006), Axe to Fall (2009), All We Love We Leave Behind (2012) and the 2017 release of The Dusk in Us.
In an interview with Kerrang, vocalist Jacob Bannon discussed the material recorded during The Dust in Us sessions. “It’s all about chemistry,” he says. “We’ve been working on material for five years and have so much created and documented that it takes a little while to comb through and decide what can stand on its own, and what flows better as a long-playing, fully-functioning album. You need to figure out the best way to put together this artistic puzzle.”
He goes on to say, “That whole experiment was about exploring material that already existed and playing it for people in a way we didn’t get a chance to as a four-piece band.”
In addition to releasing the four-song Beautiful Ruin, Converge have shared a video for “Melancholia,” directed by Tony Wolski, and will begin their west coast tour with Neurosis July 6 that will take the bands from the Pacific Northwest through California.
