Beloved feminist hardcore punk outfit War on Women have just unveiled a new music video for their song, “Anarcha.” The track is the tenth cut off of the band’s recent sophomore LP Capture the Flag, which dropped just this past April via Bridge 9. Other incredible singles from the record include “YDTMHTL” (standing for “you dont’ tell me how to live”) and “Lone Wolves.”
The co-ed collective’s new video features the outfit in a gritty performance of the song itself, in what seems like an underground parking lot. The lyrics tackle one of the darkest topics on the record: Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, three enslaved women who were experimented on by James Marion Sims, the man dubbed the father of modern gynecology.
Vocalist Shawna Potter commented, “This song is about all the stories our country has buried or ignored,” commented vocalist Shawna Potter about “Anarcha.” “I wanted to memorialize Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey in the best way I knew how, through song, and the shooting of this video just happened to coincide with tearing down a statue of J. Marion Sims, the man who experimented on them and other enslaved women.”
