Chicago’s The Break Music Festival has announced its Vol. II lineup. Wu-Tang Clan, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and Talib Kweli are set to play the festival, taking place at the East Lot of the Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois September 8th. Vic Mensa, Freddie Gibbs, Curren$y, Twista and King Lil G are also playing the festival. See the rest of the lineup below.
Wu-Tang Clan will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album, Enter the 36 Chambers, released back in November 1993. It has sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. and is certified platinum. Yasiin Bey previously stated that he will be working with Talib Kweli and DJ Madlib on a new record. Kweli stated in an interview earlier this year that he was just as surprised as everyone else when Bey made the statement. “I found out on the internet the same way y’all did,” he added. “We’ve been talking about doing an album with Madlib for years. That’s been an idea we’ve had for so long, but for him to make that announcement … It’s not like we discussed it and said, ‘Ok, we’re going to announce it.’” He continued to hint that the collab album will indeed happen. “It’s an idea we have been discussing for a long time, now we just gotta make it happen,” Kweli said.
Freddie Gibbs was recently featured in DJ Muggs and MF Doom’s video for Deathwish, off of their joint project “MUGGS X DOOM.”
In a press release, The Breaks Producer Chris Tribes discussed their plans for this year’s festival. “Last year’s lineup was met with such enthusiasm, that we saw no option but to do it again, and go bigger. We plan to take it up a notch or five from last year’s first volume, and couldn’t be more excited about the array of talent we have assembled.”
This is the second year for the festival, with last years lineup including Tech N9ne, Method Man and Redman, Slaughterhouse, Cam’Ron and Immortal Technique. The festival is dedicated to hip-hop artists and rising emcees and will include graffiti artists and DJ tents. Additional activities will be announced at a later date. Tickets are available now on the festival’s website, with tickets starting at $70.
