Death Cab For Cutie Shares Lyric Video For “Gold Rush”

Indie pop and rock staples Death Cab for Cutie have just released a lyric video for their single “Gold Rush,” following the release of the music video two weeks ago. The band has since gone on to also perform the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The new lyric video features frontman Ben Gibbard flipping through the lyrics on large placards in the middle of the road in front of a construction site, throwing each of the cards off to the side as the song progresses. Though it is an obvious homage to Bob Dylan’s 1965 promotional film (essentially the precursor to the modern music video) for “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” it is done tastefully and with respect to the original.

The single comes from the band’s upcoming ninth studio record Thank You for Today, which will be dropping on August 17 via Atlantic Records.

The album will be their first of theirs to exclude Chris Walla, who was a founding member (discarding the first release done by Gibbard alone) and the band’s longtime producer. However, it is also their first album with guitarist Dave Depper and keyboardist Zac Rae as new official members in the studio, who have been part of the touring band since 2015.

Along with the new lyric video comes the announcement of a fall tour from Death Cab for Cutie. The band will be playing a series of intimate venues and theatres across North America between late September and mid-October, which will be followed up by a UK/European tour which was announced last week.
