Alice in Chains Announce First New Album in Five Years Rainier Fog for August 2018 Release

Alice in Chains have announced their first new album in five years, Rainier Fog, will be released August 24. As a teaser for the upcoming record, Chains have also shared the new song “So Far Under.”

Alice in Chains formed in Seattle in 1987 amidst the grunge movement and have released five previous studio albums including Facelift (1990), Dirt (1992), Alice in Chains (1995), Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), and the Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013).

Rainer Fog marks the group’s the third album with singer William Duval, who joined the band after the passing of original singer Lane Staley. Ultimate Guitar reports Duval recently spoke to The Eddie Trunk Podcast about his time with the group, saying, “It’s funny, time is a weird thing. Some people say, ‘Time is an illusion.’ Because it is. It’s weird how your mind perceives it. In some ways, it feels like every bit of 12 years. In some ways, it feels like 5 minutes.”

The new record is their first on BMG and was recorded in Seattle with producer Nick Raskulinecz and engineer Paul Figueroa. Frontman Duval said of the new album, “It’s about feeling completely up against it – outnumbered, surrounded, facing seemingly unbeatable odds and being really pissed off about it. It was inspired by personal circumstances, as well as events in the wider world. But it’s not as resigned to defeat as it may seem.

“The lyric is a cold, hard assessment of a difficult situation but the music has a message all its own. There’s still room to flip the script. Every aspect of writing and recording this song will always be remembered with a lot of joy – from recording the basic tracks and the guitar solo at Studio X in Seattle to doing further overdubs at Nick Raskulinecz’s studio in rural Tennessee. Everyone in the band and our studio team really stepped up and knocked it out of the park on this one. We’re extremely proud of this song and the entire album.”
