Sylvan Esso Offers a Behind-The-Scenes Look into Life on the Road in Video for “Signal”

Electronic duo Sylvan Esso have shared a video for their single, “Signal,” off the group’s latest album, Now What, released in April 2017.

The group formed in Durham, North Carolina, in 2013 and consists of singer Amelia and producer Nick Sanborn. Their debut album, Sylvan Esso, was released in 2014 via Partisan Records and reached No. 39 on the Billboard 200.

The documentary-style video for “Signal” features footage from the group’s tour, set against the track’s lulling beats and uplifting vocals. During an interview with NPR, singer-songwriter Amelia Meath spoke about writing “Signal,” saying, “It’s about life mimicking technology and technology mimicking life. Searching for truth and honesty in a sea of noise. How, despite all the changes to the ways we go about it, we all still want the same thing any human has ever wanted: to be, connect with other humans and feel understood.”

Redefining the pop genre can be a tricky endeavor. In an interview with Independent, while promoting Now What, Meath discusses her take on the genre. “There’s a funny thing that happens when you write pop music,” she says. “It’s really funny because the genre is so formulaic and you have to really think about everything you do in order to get that pop feeling that lifts you into the stratosphere.”
