Mark Kozelek, the primary recording artist of Sun Kil Moon and founding member of Red House Painters, has just released a new solo music video for new song, “666 Post.”
His self-titled solo album came out in May 2018. This was his first of two records this year. He is also set to release a new Sun Kil Moon LP in November. In addition to this, a collaborative LP with Donny McCaslin and Jim White is due next year.
However, this music video is different than most others you will see. In this work, he is able to enhance his storytelling ability with not only words but also images. He takes on an almost spoken word like tone as he tells the story of the song. Written and performed in stream-of-consciousness and dream state, the song plays over an animated video made by animator Kieran O’Hare. O’Hare turns Kozelek’s song and story into a project. In this work, they have chosen to use interesting objects such as a pumpkin-man in an orange suit, changing backgrounds, weird pets, and more interesting things to tell the story.
The song portrays Kozelek in a stream of consciousness state. He narrates and sings what is doing and thinking as he does it. Color is one of the main things in the song that Kozelek talks about so the video provides just that—a variety of color. The visuals change in the video just as quickly as Kozelek thinks of and sings of the next image. The song is complex and requires a careful ear and eye. It begins as a personal narrative but goes on to incorporate bigger ideas that transcend just the self.
