Alice Glass Finds Gothic Victorian Inspiration in New Video for “Mine”

Alice Glass has released a video for her song, “Mine,” featuring a gothic aesthetic and starring drag performer Violet Chachki.

According to Pitchfork, Glass said “‘Mine’ is about someone who hurts themselves in an attempt to regain control of [of] their own life and experiences. It’s a form of self-sacrifice and also an act of personal freedom for someone who feels completely out of control. I do not condone self-harm, but like a lot of my music ‘Mine’ is about my struggle with coming out of an intensely abusive relationship. In the ritual of hurting myself or taking something from myself I am at the very least in control of that act, when in so many other aspects of my life I felt hopeless.”

“Mine” follows the Canadian born singer’s self-titled debut solo EP and a string of tracks including “Cease and Desist” and “Forgiveness.”

Last fall, Glass accused former Crystal Castles bandmate Ethan Kath of abuse. “The first time he took advantage of me was when I was around 15.” She goes onto say, “He forced me to have sex with him or, he said, I wouldn’t be allowed to be in the band anymore.”

Kath denied the allegations, saying, “I am outraged and hurt by the recent statements made by Alice about me and our prior relationship,” he said. “Her story is pure fiction and I am consulting my lawyers as to my legal options.”
