Low, the pop band together since 1993, is releasing something new. The married couple, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker have announced a new album due in September, Double Negative, and they have just released a stunning new music video for three new songs: “Quorum”, “Dancing and Blood”, and “Fly”.
“Quorum” is the first to appear on the screen. Dizzying black and white images appear blurry on the screen. The static is interrupted by ethereal synth harmonies that offset the dissonance of the static. Images of group singing the lyrics and playing the piano are split into three with close ups in the forefront and blurred images in the background. The music video moves seamlessly through the music selections. The music ranges from slow to upbeat to heart-pounding.
The video displays the band’s and the director’s creativity and vision for the piece. At one point, standing right next to each other, there is a woman and an old man dancing on a pole, the style very different yet both are having a good time. This is the introduction to “Dancing and Blood.” With a more sultry beat, this music is the backdrop for a night club with young and old people alike.
“Fly” is the last video to be shown. This begins with a woman going through the stages of life, from old to young to old again. The vocals state “leave my weary bones and fly.” The song has a more sad, considered feel to it as it represents a relationship between an aging, dying mother and young child. The song moves along slowly as opposed to the two before it.
In addition to this complex set of videos, the band is also going on tour. Here are some of the tour dates and shows:
