Bristol punk band the Idles take a resounding stance against immigrant bias in their video for “Danny Nedelko,” off the group’s upcoming record, Joy as an Act of Resistance., out August 31.
The video features the band’s close friend, the real Danny Nedelko, who is himself a Ukrainian immigrant, walking the streets, connecting with immigrants and advancing the message of global unity. Stark, anthem styled lyrics reinforce global connectedness and tear down superficial barriers relating to ethnicity. “He’s made of bones, he’s made of blood/He’s made of flesh, he’s made of love/He’s made of you, he’s made of me/Unity!”
During his travels, Nedelko, who self-directed the video, poses with immigrants and flashes the okay symbol, which, according to Stereogum, has been recently used by the white power movement, while wearing a shirt that reads, “No Man is an Island.”
“Danny Nedelko” follows the release of “Colossus,” the group’s first effort for their new label, Partisan records. In a statement regarding the upcoming album, singer Joe Talbot said, “This album is an attempt to be vulnerable to our audience and to encourage vulnerability; a brave naked smile in this shitty new world. We have stripped back the songs and lyrics to our bare flesh to allow each other to breathe, to celebrate our differences, and act as an ode to communities and the individuals that forge them. Because without our community, we’d be nothing.”
This fall, in support of Joy as an Act of Resistance, Idles will embark on a global tour which includes stops in NYC’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 22, and LA’s Teragram on October 9. Check out the new video and the new album tracklist below.
