Damien Jurado has released the nostalgic new video for his single, “Percy Faith,” off his 13th studio album, The Horizon Just Laughed, released May 4.
The video, deftly fuses and juxtaposes past with present, modern with postmodern, by eloquently montaging vintage clips that transport the viewer to an unknown temporal space. The sonic experience is fully realized with Jurado’s emotionally nuanced vocals while grounded by the track’s steady drums.
Ghettoblaster reported Lance Alton Troxel, who directed the video, said of the concept, “Part variety show number, part conspiracy video, ‘Percy Faith’ riffs on Jurado’s incisive take on nostalgia, media, modernity, and our own meaning and place in all of it.”
The Horizon Just Laughed has been critically received with the Wall Street Journal saying Jurado uses “disarming sincerity and no small dose of charm, seamlessly blending lyrical storytelling and skillfully arranged indie-folk music.”
In an interview with PopMatters, Jurado discusses his conceptual relationship with time and how it relates to the new album. “We’re also talking about dimensional living. So if I am the past me who is able to be in the present now, with me in this room, currently as I’m talking to you, that past me’s aware of the present me and also of the future me. The future me’s also aware of both the past and present me, but I can’t see what me I’m talking about. But it’s all the same me. I don’t know. See I’m even talking, I’m even confusing myself here. It’s very confusing. But to me, it seems like a truth.”’
