Bristol group Idles have shared an intense new video for their single, “Colossus.” The single follows the group’s 2017 debut release of the critically received album, Brutalism, and marks their first effort for the new label, Partisan Records.
The single features a post-punk sound that recalls the sounds of Joy Division while the new video, directed by Will Hopper, tackles issues of toxic masculinity through cinematic metaphors and cameos from Stone Cold Steve Austin, Fred Astaire, Evel Knievel, Jesus Christ and more. According to DIY, the track questions inherent definitions of manhood through lyrics like, “I am my father’s son, his shadow weighs a ton,” and continues with “I don’t wanna be your man.”
Singer Talbot recently addressed the band’s move to Partisan saying, “IDLES have signed to Partisan Records. This is not a decision based on greed. They excite us and have injected ideas and passions into our camp that we would not have mustered. We as a family have realized our limitations in as far as the ship we have built with you all is becoming too much for the team we have to achieve the best of our abilities. It was time to admit a necessity for help but we needed that to come in the form of trusted, earnest and like-minded people who were as passionate about our art and you people as we were: Partisan Records are the partners we were looking for.”
The band is fresh out of the studio after recording their new album and plans to release their sophomore effort in 2018. Check out the new video for “Colossus” here:
