Thom Yorke debuts a new song titled, “The Axe” on the first night of his European Tour at Teartro Verdi in Florence, Italy. So far, fans are in for a sweet listening experience.
Yorke, the lead singer and principal songwriter for Radiohead, is working on some new music by himself and maybe even some new things for the band. Currently, he is doing work on a second solo album, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, and he is playing shows on a European tour promoting his new music before joining Radiohead again on their tour.
He has shown signs on social media that new music is on the way. Atoms for Peace has also recently been re-added to Spotify as of December 2017.
Before beginning he says to the crowd, “this is still an experiment.” The crowd got to talking with Thom before he began and he drummed up some laughs.
This song is more along the lines of experimental rock with synth tones and lazy vocals laid sporadically on the top of the music. Behind him on stage, the screens showed electronic images that were fading in and out and breaking up the light on the stage. At one point, the stage went dark enough to where the audience couldn’t see but only hear. At points in the performance, he was behind the board making music and at other times, he was out in the middle of the stage with only a microphone.
In the live debut of “The Axe,” he sings a majority of the song in a falsetto that is equally haunting and intriguing. The music takes a influences from electronic sound. The music is a more modern sound that really catches the listener’s attention. He seems to be finding his own sound now. This eleven-minute clip keeps the listeners interested throughout the whole performance and they erupt in cheers after the end of the song.
