Father John Misty Debuts A New Song “Please Don’t Die”

Father John Misty, born Joshua Michael Tillman, debuted his new song, “Please Don’t Die,” off his upcoming album, God’s Favorite Customer, which will drop June 1 via Sub Pop/Bella Union. According to Pitchfork, Tillman played the new track, accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra, during his set at Biggest Weekend 2018 in Belfast.

Pitchfork Reports God’s Favorite Customer was produced by Tillman, and that he recorded with Jonathan Rado (Foxygen), Dave Cerminara and Trevor Spencer. The record features artists Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood), the Haxan Cloak, Jonathan Wilson and members from the FJM touring band. Tillman has recorded three previous albums as Misty including Fear Fun (2012), I Love You, Honeybear (2015) and Pure Comedy (2017).

In May, mxdwn reported Misty will launch an extensive world tour in support of his new album. The artist has 70 shows lined up between May and November including Newport Folk (July 28) and Austin City Limits (October 5-7 and October 12-14). The tour will feature artists Blitzen Trapper, Gillian Welch, TV on the Radio, Bully and Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley) among others for select dates.

Tillman has been notably quiet about the upcoming album but Stereogum reports the artist did speak with Uncut in November 2017 about God’s Favorite Customer, saying “Most of this next album was written in a six-week period where I was kind of on the straits. I was living in a hotel for two months. It’s kind of about… yeah… misadventure. The words were just pouring out of me. It’s really rooted in something that happened last year that was… well, my life blew up. I think the music essentially serves the purpose of making the painful and the isolating less painful and less isolating. But in short, it’s a heartache album…”
