Thievery Corporation have released a new song today with verses from MC Mr. Lif and soul singer Sitali. It’s a track from their latest album Treasures from the Temple, which was released in April of 2018. It follows their 2017 release Temple of I & I.
Mostly shot in black and white, the video directed by Christopher “Puma Ptah” Smith hammers home the message of the soulful song. Mr. Lif drops his lines seated on a vintage chair amid stacks of books. A song called “History” created by people of color is obviously going to need to touch on systemic oppression, with Mr. Lif going into specifics about the barriers to education and media shaming of specific protesters. Meanwhile, the chorus “You got the soul / Live with it every day / You got the role / that everybody gotta play / Break out the rows / Learn your history / You got the soul / Live with it every day” is a call to take a deep look at history and learn some lessons.
Treasures from the Temple is not fully a “new” LP from Thievery Corporation. Instead, it includes remixes from their previous album Temple of I & I as well as some original tracks. Recently, founding member Rob Garza has been releasing some solo material. mxdwn recently premiered the latest song from what is building up to be an EP called Dissolve, “Your Calling.” Compared with the Thievery Corporation track “History,” this new solo song has much stronger roots in house music than hip-hop.
