Best Coast mix nostalgia with a sweet melody on their new track, “Jerry (Maybe We Should Get Married).” According to Consequences of Sound, Bethany Cosentino, who sings the Seinfeld ode honoring the 20th anniversary of the show’s finale, blends famous Elaine quotes like, “I hate men but I’m not a lesbian!” and “yada-yada.”
Stereogum reports the song was released via the Twitter parody account, @Seinfeld 2000, which is run by noted fan, Ezra Koenig, who previously sang the Seinfeld theme for a Junior Mint video game. In what could have been a clumsy effort, the new collaboration between Best Coast, songwriter Nick Lutsko and @Seinfeld2000, perfectly integrates dialogue and tune, resulting in a seamless song parody.
Best Coast, consisting of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, formed in Los Angeles in 2009. The duo is known for successfully re-framing pop music of the 50s and 60s and have released three albums including Crazy for You (2010), The Only Place (2012) and California Nights (2015).
In a 2015 interview with Stereogum, the duo talks about their collaborative process: “Our way of working is pretty much exactly the same as it was the first time we ever recorded anything together. The reason why I think we work so well together as a duo has to do with the fact that we actually don’t write together, which I know people often think is weird. I can sit at home, write a bunch of songs and demo them, send them to Bobb with a little paragraph about what inspired it or which song by the Sundays I wanted it to sound like or whatever, and then he takes it and puts his own spin on it.”
