Grindcore band Pig Destroyer have officially announced their new album, Head Cage, will be released this September through Relapse Records, according to PRP. The group, formed in 1997 in Alexandria, Virginia, have released five previous records including Explosions in Ward 6 (1998), Prowler in the Yard (2001), Terrifyer (2004), Phantom Limb (2007) and Book Burner (2012).
Metal Injection reports the new album is twelve tracks with a running time of 31:01. The closing track runs over seven minutes while most of the other tracks run around two minutes in length. Robert Pasbani, of Metal Injection, describes the sound as “everything you want out of Pig Destroyer’s music.”
In 2012, Pitchfork provided an unrelenting review of the opening tracks for Book Burner saying, “During those four minutes, we get saturation-sprayed by the kind of rasping scream that will keep some future ear-nose-and-throat specialist in cushy golfing weekends.” It goes on to say, “Frontman J.R. Hayes has one of the best and most convincing lunatic presences in metal. Even if he’s a pussycat in his home life, when he’s psycho-raving on record he turns into the guy on the subway you hope would move along to the next car.”
In an interview with noisey, frontman J.R. Hayes discusses his views on lyrics saying, “In the context of music, most people don’t care. People can listen to a song for twenty years and not really listen to what they’re saying. As long as it sounds good, people don’t really give a fuck.”
The coming brutality, morbidity, and insanity of the new album, Head Cage, will be available this coming September.
UPDATE (6/27): Pig Destroyer has released a teaser video with details about their upcoming album Head Cage. Additionally, the band have confirmed the album will be released September 7 on Relapse Records.
