Electronic meets atmospheric
Jon Hopkins released his ninth studio album, Singularity, and it is a mix of both electronic and atmospheric sounds to make for a complex album. The album takes the listener on a journey through all of the different sounds and effects throughout.
The opening track, “Singularity” draws the listener in with a Stranger Things-esque sound to the intro, which builds up to a fairly solid dance track. The beat is faster-paced and could easily be played at a dance club. The overall feeling of the track is somewhat extraterrestrial, which sets the listener up nicely for the adventure the album is about to take them on.
“Neon Pattern Drum” follows a similar pattern in the structure of the song when compared to “Singularity,” but it is set apart based on a slight change in the beat that is obvious upon listening closely. The beat is slowed down just enough to change the vibe of the entire track.
An even more atmospheric feel on the album can be found in the track “Feel First Life.” It is a slower track on the album, but it is one of those songs you would turn on during a late night, summer drive. It is easy to get lost in this track while listening to it. There are so many calming layers to it that you hear something new and pretty with each listen. There is nice piano paired with almost angelic-sounding vocals layered throughout.
The song “C O S M” takes the listener to a completely different headspace. This particular song evokes feelings of sunshine and being out in an open field on a summer day. There is a simplicity about the track that is refreshing to listen to, especially in the electronic genre. By the end of the song, there is an almost mystic feeling to what is being heard, and it is easy to keep this track on repeat.
The album closes on a much quieter note than what it began on. The piano on this track is really beautiful and it makes you want to keep listening, even though it is a slower track. This is the type of song you would hear in an indie movie to set a scene up perfectly and give you all of the feels. Jon Hopkins does a good job of evoking a wide spread of emotions throughout the entirety of the album.
Whether you are a fan of electronic music or not, Jon Hopkins has created and released the perfect album to cater to both groups. Singularity finds a balance between atmospheric and electronic, making for an album that never gets boring while listening to it.
