For those unfamiliar with the hardworking musician Uffie, she is a French-American singer, rapper, DJ, and fashion designer who was originally signed to Ed Banger Records. Her music is usually in the dreamy realm of synthpop but also creates music from acid house, rap, and nu skool.
More recently, Uffie has been a little missing in action as her last music released comes from 2011. Now, according to music publication The Fader, it seems Uffie has finally returned from her seven year hiatus with her new single “Drugs.”
The song begins with her vocals travelling through the wormhole of the vocoder, using very little melodic bleeps to add some more color. Uffie uses the vocoder in a way that emotes such emotion that one can almost feel the pining love that seems to be the focal point of the song. Though the vocoder is a main instrument in the piece, there is also a brilliant use of synth bass and percussion that drives the song even further, adding more and more perpetual energy as time passes.
In response to her own release of the new single “Drugs” Uffie has said that “After taking some much needed time out with my family, I am so excited to be sharing music again with my other family: my fans.” says Uffie. “This record digs deeper than I ever have and reflects the joy, growth, and pain of my life experiences. Hearts break, joy sings, and we’ve always got each other on the dance floor.”

During her hiatus, Uffie made an extremely rare guest star appearance on Charli XCX’s mixtape Number I Angel. There has been no hint to a new tour or a full album, but I am sure this will not be the last new music we will here from Uffie for the next seven years.
