Houndmouth, released a new single, “This Party,” a synth-laden fusion of pop and rock with a danceable beat. The track, currently available for purchase and stream, comes from the New Albany, Indiana-based Houndmouth and was described by guitarist/vocalist Matt Myers as “a party song without wanting to be at a party.” The collaborative track was co-produced by Jonathon Rado of Foxygen and Lemon Twigs along with Shawn Everett of Alabama Shakes and The War on Drugs.
Houndmouth, formed in 2011, currently consists of members Matt Myers (guitar, vocals), Zak Appleby (bass, vocals), and Shane Cody (drums, vocals). The band has changed over the years, and in April 2016 they announced Kate Toupin (keyboard, vocals) would be leaving the group to pursue other opportunities.
The band’s new song is notably more pop-centric and reminiscent of bands like Blur and Gorillaz that mix pop, rock, and electronica. The stylistic evolution of the band which, in the past, has focused on a more guitar heavy sound with a blues edge, comes in anticipation of their new album, due this summer.
HuffPost described the band as, “Intoxicating harmonies and passionate howling from the depths of a seemingly possessed soul, Houndmouth are the best indie band in America.” The group has also caught the eye of NPR which reviewed the band’s 2015 album Little Neon Limelight: “Quite a bit of Houndmouth’s reputation has been built on exuberant live shows and the Greek chorus effect of voices joining in hale and hearty harmony during every refrain. They tap those sensibilities in even more vital ways on Little Neon Limelight, with a youthful devotion to shaggy, swinging, big-screen storytelling that distinguishes their work from many of their more confessional, serious minded peers.”
