The year of 2018 has seen a bunch of music news revolving around Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins from reunion tour to bad blood. And it seems that the Smashing Pumpkins feuds are making headlines again.
According to Consequence of Sound, when Corgan sat down to talk with Beats 1 host Lars Ulrich to talk, Ulrich has to ask Corgan about the feud between the Smashing Pumpkins lead singer and D’Arcy Wretzky.
At first, Corgan seemed to refuse talking about the situation as he didn’t want to “feed back into the machine,” but he loosened his lips about the final days between the pair. Corgan stated how two years prior to the reunion tour announcement, Corgan and Wretzky had been talking on the phone. He states, though, that they haven’t even see each other for 19 years. Apparently the talk between the two were pretty pleasant but that it became obvious that it wasn’t the way she wanted it to be, it turned into this other thing that was reminiscent of the past.”
When talking about how the band feels moving forward without Wretzky, Corgan quoted his bandmate and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. He said: “If you’re really not passionate about what you do and you’re not passionate about providing that passion to fans by extension and saying, ‘Look we really love what we do and we want to share this with you.’ If that relationship is not at the heart of what you do, then what are you doing? The thing that keeps you on the rudder is the music and the fact that somehow when the three of us [Corgan, Chamberlin, and James Iha) come together, this magical thing happens that’s bigger than me, and I have no problem admitting to that. And if that’s not your guiding principle, then it’s a shitty reality show. And we don’t want the shitty reality show, we really don’t. We’d rather just stay on the music, and if we can do that, great.”
It seems that despite not having the original lineup, the Smashing Pumpkins will still mostly reunite for a tour filled with the 1990s nostalgia we all need.
