Simian Mobile Disco is an English electronic duo formed by Jas Shaw and and James Ford in 2003. The band’s fifth studio album Murmurations which will be released set for release on May 11th, 2018 via Wichita Recordings.
The four minute music video opens with five dancers, four in a single file line with one standing apart from the group in different dress and make up. The dancers in the line have uniform hair, make up and outfits, the only one with a different hairstyle is the one that was separated at the beginning of the video. The dancer that was initially standing apart from the group is transformed by the other dancers and transformed to look like them. The music video for “Defender” also includes an older looking video that is woven in and out. The dancers in the video look similar to each other and perform the same dance moves.
The music video’s director and choreographer Del Valle described the video as “Our female character survives and overcomes obstacles in both previous chapters; by overcoming personal battles she achieves growth. In Chapter 3 she is greeted by a group of female warriors that to me are singing her own story as if she could both see herself in the warriors and the warriors see themselves in her…”.
According to mxdwn the electronic group had to cancel tour dates in June after band member Jas Shaw was diagnosed with AL Amyloidosis, a rare disease that affects the functions of organs and tissue. Shaw will likely undergo chemotherapy, as it is the typical approach to alleviating the symptoms. Before the band took a hiatus they performed their last “Murmurations” show on April 4th in London.
