Kali Uchis Releases Self-Directed Video Featuring “Gotta Get Up” and “Body Language”

Colombian-American singer-songwriter Kali Uchis has just released a new self-directed music video titled “Get Up,” which features both of her songs “Gotta Get Up” and “Body Language.”

The video is mainly based around “Body Language” but it utilizes the hook from “Gotta Get Up” to great effect as a point of contrast. Both tracks are from Uchis’ recently released debut LP Isolation, which has received near universal critical acclaim. The album is an exercise in collaboration, featuring the likes of Tyler, the Creator and Bootsy Collins in “After the Storm,” Gorillaz’ and Blur’s Damon Albarn for “In My Dreams,” TV on the Radio’s David Sitek on “Miami” and Thundercat on “Body Language (Intro).”

“I went through so many different things, and been at so many different stages,” Kali said about her debut album. “There’s heartbreak, there’s finding love, there’s finding yourself, falling apart, getting it together. Some really deep elements of my life are on here. But I can write a song in like,10 minutes, and record them really fast – my best songs are ones I don’t have to struggle with.”

The video opens with the singer walking into and through her own funeral, and follows her as she navigates what seems to be her rendition of the afterlife, complete with ostentatious palatial rooms filled to the brim with opulence. She then transitions into the realm of nature as she dances in the rain, surrounded by tress, until the video closes with her floating away in the water.

Even before her album, Uchis was turning heads by earning a 2017 Best R&B Performance Grammy for “Get You,” her collaboration with Daniel Caesar, as well as Record of the Year Latin Grammy for her track with Juanes, “El Ratico.”
