Canadian extreme metal musician Devin Townsend has announced a comprehensive vinyl collection project which will be issued under the name Eras. The first of the collections will be released June 8th, 2018 and it features the quadrilogy of albums that were released between 2009 and 2011 when the Devin Townsend Project first appeared on the scene.
What is curious about the title of this box set is that just a few months ago Townsend said on Twitter the name of his DVD/CD release of his Plovdiv concert playing Ocean Machine live for its 20th anniversary would be ERAS. The question is, did Townsend change his mind and use the title ERAS for the box set instead of the live release, with the live release slated to be released under another title? It could also be the case that the live release will be one of the volumes of the ERAS vinyl release series.
The boxset is complete with 7 LPs and will include the records KI, Addicted, Deconstruction and Ghost. This release presents a unique opportunity for Townsend completionists, ERA will be the first time that Deconstruction and Ghost will be made available on vinyl, while KI and Addicted are long out of print. All of the albums will come in gatefold sleeves on 180g vinyl and have been specially remastered for the best possible sound and listening experience. The two-piece box set will also include a LP-booklet that features all lyrics, liner notes and remarks from Devin, and it is limited to 2000 copies worldwide. A total of four boxsets will be released over the next few months.
Devin says: “The Devin Townsend Project, although it went further than I had originally planned, began life as these four albums. Ki, Addicted, Deconstruction and Ghost. The music evolved in line with a period of intense personal growth, and the albums in chronological order were meant to illustrate that change. The amount of people involved with this was extensive, and the journey was one that defined my career in ways I cannot over express. These four albums are really what the Devin Townsend Project was about.
I have been asked repeatedly over the last few years to provide these albums on vinyl, in one set. So we took this opportunity to put together ‘ERAS’, which is the definitive vinyl box-set encapsulating this period of my life and work that I am exceptionally proud of. As always, this wouldn’t have come to fruition without the support of the tremendous audience who has allowed it to flourish, so respect to both yourselves, the people involved, and the music itself, we present to you; ‘ERAS’. Thank you for allowing me to continue to do what I do.”
Townsend began work on new music on March 27 with no timetable or release date as of yet.
