Legendary Austin, Texas and Chicago based rock band The Jesus Lizard are going to carry the momentum of a number of sold-out shows they played last winter with eight new dates this fall. The band will kick off the tour September 6 in Washington D.C. and will hit other major markets such as Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia, Austin, Seattle, Portland and Atlanta.
Stereogum called The Jesus Lizard “one of the greatest live bands ever” while the Chicago Tribune said “the Jesus Lizard played with snarling menace and granite-splitting grind that evoked the factory-dominated feel of the pre-gentrified Chicago in which the band cut its teeth.”
The band formed in 1987 in Austin, Texas after the breakup of the band Scratch Acid. They were formed by vocalist David Yow and bassist David Wm. Sims and they later joined guitarist Duane Denison and a drum machine to record their debut EP with legendary producer Steve Albini (Pixies, Cheap Trick, and The Breeders.) They replaced the drum machine with hard-htting drummer Mac McNeilly and recorded their first full length in 1990 called Head.
The band would go on to release five more full length studio albums including Goat, Liar, Down, Shot and most recently Blue in 1998. Shot and Blue were released on Capitol Records while the previous four albums were released via Touch and Go.
The Jesus Lizard disbanded in 1999 as one of the more influential bands of their generation. Pitchfork has said of the band, “The guys were certainly loud and obnoxious, practically threatening, but there was visceral charge in listening to their titanic pulse– their sheer volume majestic.”
