Off of John Prine’s first new album in over thirteen years, the song “Summer’s End” is another classic from the American folk craftsman. The record, titled The Tree of Forgiveness, celebrates his lengthy career since the 70’s, featuring artists such as Pat McLaughlin, Roger Cook, Dan Auerbach (Gorillaz, Blur), Keith Sykes, and producer Phil Spector.
Performing the track for the first time, Prine stopped by CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert Thursday night with special guests Brandi Carlile and Sturgill Simpson. Rolling Stone reported that for Colbert announced on air the “special performance from three of my favorite artists who are performing together for the first time.” Fats Kaplin, famous American fiddle player, was also part of the backing band on steel guitar.
Sturgill Simpson will also join Prine at New York’s legendary Radio City Music Hall, followed by a performance on Saturday, April 14th in Philadelphia featuring hometown favorite Kurt Vile.
