Florence + the Machine have debuted a new track and music video for “Sky Full Of Song”, with a limited edition, double A-side 7” vinyl to follow on April 21. today. The stripped down video is shot in a minimalist black and white style, as lead singer Florence Welch begins singing acapella. As the song grows and becomes fully formed, arresting scenes of symbolism are inserted between shots of Welch lying on the floor, tired, defeated, pleading into the camera as she sings. Sprawled on the floor, a tiny sapling is nestled in the cusp of her hand.
Of the song, Welch said, “This was a song that just fell out of the sky fully formed. Sometimes when you are performing you get so high, it’s hard to know how to come down. There is this feeling of being cracked open, rushing endlessly outwards and upwards, and wanting somebody to hold you still, bring you back to yourself. It’s an incredible, celestial, but somehow lonely feeling.”
The Record Store Day version of “Sky Full Of Song” will be backed by a recording of “New York poem (for Polly),” from Welch’s forthcoming book Useless Magic, a collection of lyrics, artwork and poetry from the artist, for sale on July 5th.
