Prima Donna have always had a air of glam about their aesthetic and sound but deep down, they’re a rock ‘n roll band. That much is made clear in the new video for their straightforward power pop song “Press Your Luck.” The video was shot in the ruins of an old boathouse in the Bay Area town of Crockett. There, the band run through the organ-infused song that is about a hopeless relationship.
“It was great to work with director Arthur Leon Adams III for the third time,” said singer and guitarist Kevin Preston. “We filmed the video in an abandoned boathouse on a shipyard in Crockett, and it completely reflected the doomed relationship the song is about.” Preston and company hail from Southern California and have quietly amassed a sizable fanbase over the course of their career. David S. Field (drums, percussion), Aaron Minton (keyboards, saxophone, vocals) and Lights Out Levine (bass, vocals) round out the rest of the lineup.
“This one has a cool Oasis/Social Distortion thing to it with the singing and melodies,” said Minton. “My favorite part occurs in the chorus, when Kevin sings ‘…you know you better.’ The notes sung have almost a Four Seasons vibe.”
While Prima Donna have a moderate-but-growing fanbase, they’ve played some of the biggest venues in the world when they toured with Green Day on their international tours. Additional, Preston plays with Billie Joe Armstrong in their side project Foxboro Hottubs (how can you forget their surprise rock hit “Mother Mary”).
The band recently released their new self-titled album on Wicked Cool Records. For those unaware, that is E Street Band member Steven Van Zant’s label. The Boss’s guitarist thinks these guys are pretty excellent, having chosen them for his “Coolest Song in the World” feature five separate times in addition to releasing their album.
