While there seems to be a glut of music festivals that has caused many to bite the dust, there is a steady stream of new ones that have risen to take their place. This year Bonnaroo and Outside Lands co-founders Superfly have added to that stream with a new festival in Colorado called Grandoozy. It will all go down at Overland Park Golf Course on the southern end of Denver, CO. It’ll take place September 14-16, an ambitious three days on its very first go-round.
Also ambitious is the lineup of this festival, which is rounded out by several of the hottest tickets on the festival circuit – as well as one throwback surprise. Kendrick Lamar and Florence + The Machine are unsurprising headliners, having been announced atop the posters of several of 2018’s biggest festivals. A bit of a left-field surprise is Stevie Wonder, who adds a bit of a retro appeal to the festival and may help attract some older fans. A couple artists on the flyer are being announced for two festivals today (along with Lollapalooza) like St. Vincent and Logic.
The festival is quite diverse with Americana acts like Sturgill Simpson and Kevin Morby sharing a bill with pop and rap artists like The Chainsmokers, Miguel, De La Soul, Big K.R.I.T. and Ty Dolla Sign. There are plenty of indie rock staples like The War On Drugs, Phoenix, Young The Giant, Tennis and Gang of Youths. Billed surprisingly low is Kelela, who released one of the best albums of 2017 with Take Me Apart. Rounding out the rest of this eclectic lineup are 6lack, Mavis Staples, Daniel Caesar, Snow Tha Product, Bishop Briggs, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Poolside, Dragondeer, Gasoline Lollipops, The Soul Rebels, Jade Bird, Bayonne, Flaural, Andy Frasco & The U.N., Wilderado and Lost Lakes.
While a golf course may sound a bit dull for a festival location, Overland Park is filled with history. The park was first a homestead farm, then hosted a country club with races, before transforming into one of the first golf courses in the West. Just a few things that have gone down at the property include early balloon launching ground, the first plane flight in Colorado history, and the final Wild West Show of the famous Buffalo Bill. One thing to note for future attendees, the park does not have parking nearby so it’s important to plan your arrival ahead of time.
The festival promises several unique “experiences” across the festival grounds. These experiences include Devour Denver (local food and drink), Arts + Crafts (craft brewing), Flight School (local cocktails and spirits), The Backyard (outdoor themed) and 80s Ski Lodge (…speaks for itself).
