Preoccupations Examine an Unraveling Mind in New Video for “Disarray”

In anticipation of their upcoming new album, New Material, which is set to drop this Friday, Preoccupations have released a new single and new music video for the song “Disarray.” Directed by Ruff Merc, the visually striking music video uses a dizzying array of film effects to create a beautiful and kaleidoscopic visual. Cutting and splicing bits and pieces from other assorted media give the video a unique look and one that that is hard to describe in words. The video, shot on location at Saunton Sands in North Devon in the United Kingdom, “Disarray” follows lead singer Matt Flegel walking around a series of desolate landscapes, with the shots being interspersed with the eye-catching visual effects mentioned earlier. All of the visuals create a sense of one’s mind unraveling or a mind in a state of disarray.

Sonically, “Disarray” is a dark and brooding blend of classic electronic-influenced post-punk, mining much of the same dark territory as classic Joy Division. The production job by megaproducer Justin Meldal-Johnson gives the song a throwback vibe as well, with echo-drenched vocals and stabbing guitar lines breaking through the mix at any given point in time.

Their previous album, a self-titled Preoccupations record, won the band plenty of critical acclaim and based on the early singles that have come out in advance of New Material; fans can expect an album on par with anything else the group has done.

The band is also gearing up for a full-scale tour of North America and Europe this spring, with tour dates listed below.
