English electronic music and production duo Simian Mobile Disco today announced that they will be releasing their fifth studio record Murmurations on May 11 via Wichita Recordings, along with apparently the music video for the second single from the album: “Hey Sister.”
“Hey Sister,” directed and choreographed by Kiani Del Valle, continues the visual narrative of the video for first single “Caught In A Wave.”
“I dreamt of a female character that moves through different emotional stages while she travels across environments between real life and the subconscious,” says Del Valle of the 3 chapter visual concept, adding, “This female character becomes the umbilical cord of the 3 chapters, spiraling in and out of first-person narratives. Each chapter explores 3 different forms of movement so as to reflect the various states of the psyche. Playing with the idea of murmurations, and communal frequencies leading us to psychological discoveries of oneself, these cycles ultimately remind us that endings are hidden beginnings taking us elsewhere.”
For “Hey Sister,” Del Valle explains, “I wanted to create an abstract allegory for personal battles of longing/searching. The choreographic sequences explore perseverance, failure and external magnetic forces and thereby display the emotional journey of our main female character.” She adds, “I envisioned the lyrics of the song as voices that call our main character to ”get closer” or go further down this unknown path.”
But underneath all the complex imagery lies a beat driven dance track, part of the rest of Murmurations, which is “perfectly pitched for headphones as it is for clubs.” The album, named after giant formations of starlings and themed around the stunning emergent behaviors that appear within them, is a testament to the fact that Ford and Shaw still have the same love of pure sound, human harmonies and electronic possibilities that they did when they first met at university. It’s clear that their career path has allowed them to nurture this love and express it as vividly as ever before.
