Singer-songwriter Damien Jurado has recently announced the released of a new album titled The Horizon Just Laughed. The record, Jurado’s 13th full-length LP, will be available for purchase on May 4th via Secretly Canadian.
The songwriter has, however, released a single off of his newest work titled Over Rainbows and Rainer, which is featured in a music video. The evocative, scenic clip, directed by Jordan Halland, depicts Jurado driving a old blue Volvo on a secluded street which leads to a forest. Images of mountains, trees, green and nature are the main focus of the video, which seems to be conveying the overarching message, spelled out in the title of the song.
The record is supposed to show a more intimate, personal image of the singer, whom incidentally self-produced the album (something he hadn’t done in 20 years), and set its roots and inspiration from very personal events and stories.
As Secretly Canadian reveals, “the album feels like a beautiful collage — its narrative pieced together through letters and postcards, with each part contributing to its greater whole, and providing snapshots of one’s journey to find a sense of place and connection to a changing world”.
Jurado’s latest release, before The Horizon Just Laughed, was 2016 Visions of Us in the Land, which marked the last Richard Swift-produced records, best known as the Trilogy. Jurado and Swift are, however, long-time collaborators. Their latest release is a 2016 covers album titled Other People’s Songs Volume 1, which was first made available as a free download on a tumblr page back in 2010.
The very unique artwork for The Horizon Just Laughed was made by English collage artist Marcus Whitmore and it depicts two giant blocks of concrete, which look like two sets of stairs, hung up on a wall.
Jurado is already on tour, which he embarked on March 7th and will be on the road until November 5th for his last show in London at Union chapel.
The album can now be pre-ordered. All vinyl pre-orders will be shipped to customers one month early, on April 9th.
