The punk rock legend and feminist activist, Alice Bag releases a new music video for “77” her second song from her upcoming album, Blueprint. In the new music video, Bag pays homage to Dolly Parton’s feminist movie, “9 to 5,” which was released in the 80s. “Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’ / Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’,” Dolly Parton sings in the workplace comedy movie’s theme song. “They just use your mind and they never give you credit / It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it.”
Riot Grrrl activist Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill) and Allison Wolfe (Bratmobile) both appear in the video, and provide guest vocals. The trio of punk icons shriek and holler about the wage gap between men and women in America. As of 2012, American women only earned 77 cents to a man’s dollar. They sing: “I make 77 cents on the dollar. It’s not fair and it makes wanna holler”, Wolfe Sings: “I make 77 cents and it’s not right”. “It’s worse if you’re not white,” Bag screams in response, referencing their sisters of colors.
She sings: “You’re head of household, so am I, It’s not just about me, I still need to provide” sneering at the common justification that men are the household providers.
The trio moves to string up the boss (Played by Hunx and His Punx vocalist Seth Bogart) using a cord telephone. Bag sets off an explosion of money, and the trio continues dancing and chanting “it’s time, it’s time”.
The blue haired, Alice Bag, closes the song, singing: “Yeah, don’t pretend that we’re paid equal, you wrote the script / But I’m writing the sequel.”
