Jack White has released his new single “Over and Over” ahead of the March 23rd release of his new album Boarding House Reach. As White previously mentioned in an interview, the song has been through quite journey. 13 years ago, it was originally written for White’s former band The White Stripes until it was scrapped. Then White attempted to record it with The Raconuters before setting it aside for an infamously rumored collaboration with JAY-Z that never materialized. In an interview with Rolling Stone, White said, “It was sort of my white whale. I chased it and chased it, and finally, all of a sudden, it worked.”

For his new album,White purposefully challenged himself to create something new and different. He spent three days recording new songs with musicians he had never met before —many of them working in hip-hop. He was so inspired by the outcome of the sessions that booked three more days and did the whole project again with a different set of players. The result is an album that White says is ” incredibly modern” blending a menagerie of genres into something unique but current.

“Over and Over” definitely has traces of The White Stripes in its sound, but at the end of the day, the thumping, electro-blues beat is all White. It appears he found his sound and it does definitely work.

White’s new American tour promoting Boarding House Reach kicks off April 19th in Detroit.
