“I heard his voice when I wrote it”, says Laura Veirs about her new song Watch Fire, and the voice she is referring to is that of Sufjan Stevens. The song, says Pitchfork, will be included in her upcoming album titled The Lookout, due on April 13th, which, according to mxdwn, features the work of Screaming Females’ Marissa Paternoster.
Watch Fire, however, is not the first tune taken from The Lookout.. In anticipation for her latest record, in fact, Veirs has previously released another single called Everybody Needs You.
“Watch Fire” is about protecting the vulnerable among us and how I feel vulnerable, too, in this political climate. You can hear that in the lyric ‘underneath this dome of red / white dog circling overhead”, said the Portland-based songwriter, according to Paste Magazine.
She also added that she felt very honored to be able to collaborate with Stevens, whom she confessed to be an admirer of whose sound and style well matches that of Veirs, particularly in this track.
Stevens, who previously had Veirs singing on his song Carrie & Lowell, which tells the story of the singer troubled childhood and bear the name of his stepfather and his depressive, schizophrenic, alcoholic mother who abandoned her family with Stevens was only 12 months old, comes from a string of good news which include his recently announced performance at the 2018 Oscars ceremony, alongside Mary J. Blidge, Common and Andra Day, Keala Settle and more.
The artist will perform his song Mystery Of Love, soundtrack of the film Call Me By Your Name and nominated for Best Original Song.
Veirs last solo album Warp and Weft came out in 2013, but the singer joined forces with Neko Case and k.d. Lang in 2016 for an album case/lang/veirs, as mxdwn reported. The Lookout, however, will be released via Raven Marching Band and marks her 10th studio album
