For those of you unfamiliar with Brendon Small, he is an american writer, producer, comedian, and musician best known for his revered television animated series Home Movies and Metalocalypse as well as virtual death metal heads Dethklok. Now, Small has premiered his new live-action short film called Galaktikon: Nightmare. You can watch it on Funny or Die and below, too.
Nightmare was created and directed by Brendon Small and is, as his press release states, “the culmination of 2017’s brutal, acclaimed album, Galaktikon II: Become the Storm and its accompanying 6-part comic book series.” The entire short film took over a year to create and used a new imagery rule that small coined “Corman ‘82” with the idea that anything Roger Corman could do in 1982 could be done by small in the film. Secondly, the “Corman ‘82” rule is an imagery rule only used in a non-computer-generated manner. Definitely going to be a film for movie-buffs and music lovers alike.
Brendon Small says about his new short-film ““Nightmare is a love letter to all the filmmakers in the ‘70s and ‘80s that helped inform the creativity in my childhood.” These filmmakers include “Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Tobe Hooper, Roger Corman, Dino De Laurentiis…”
In order to get a large, cinematic feel, Small shot with an anamorphic lense and filled a plethora aquariums with different types and densities of ink in order to achieve a 1980s Flash Gordon-esque space atmosphere. Brendon’s brother Jeff Small also worked on special effects and character design for the short film, using James Cameron’s spaceship set from the 1990s. Nightmare‘s cienmatography and accompanying soundtrack are immense and full of electric wonder. The music drives the movie forward, giving the watcher a sense of what can or will happen. There is, however, a large sense of impending judgement as the harrowing and exciting music leads us through the story. Though the colors throughout the short film are loud and telling of the emotions, the use of pastel to instill glory is absolutely mesmerizing.
